After months getting settled and learning how to operate within Nairobi, Paul and I are finally setting out to Western Kenya with purpose. We have narrowed the scope of our project to a specific NGO that is related to improving the quality of construction in rural areas. Before leaving home, I had already identified a construction technology that present in Kenya, and appropriate for rural areas.
Interlocking Stabilized Soil Blocks (ISSBs), are a simple yet effective way to bring down building costs, improve aesthetics and to teach new marketable skills to youth in the area. We have purchased two machines for making bricks in 9"x4"x5" and 9"x9"x4" formats.
We have a small crew of dedicated workers/instructors who are ready to start and seriously committed to God and to the success of the project.
The goal is to teach young people new construction techniques. We would like to go from this:
To this:
In the above picture is my friend Paul on the right, and an engineer from Makiga Engineering that produces the block press machines.
I would appreciate all of the advice and prayers that anyone can offer. We hope to start in one community with the ISSB technology, as well as some other construction materials such as roof tiles and cobbling stones. Eventually we would like to expand as God permits throughout the region.

Shawn, this a BIG way to start the project. The stuff you've put across are simple, impressing and straight to the point. I like the whole idea. All the best and may God guide you and Paul through this.
ReplyDeleteI have started making and using ISSB bricks in Kampala, they are cost effective and environmentally friendly. Going green is the way forward to preserve our climate for the future generations to come. Anyone Interested please to buy and embrace this technology you can contact me on 256-772-421235 or email:jkm@jkasumbas.com
